After crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch is ready to crash land in living rooms all over the world. The heart-filled reimagining of the beloved animated classic will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ from September 3.

Directed by Oscar nominee Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), the live-action adventure has been a true 2025 standout, breaking records with a $341 million opening weekend and becoming the year’s top-grossing Motion Picture Association (MPA) release to date.

Starring Maia Kealoha, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, Courtney B. Vance, Hannah Waddingham, and the original voice of Stitch, Chris Sanders, this retelling remains true to the original story’s charm while bringing fresh energy and an authentic celebration of Hawai’i’s culture.

Following the film’s billion-dollar success, Disney has officially begun work on a live-action sequel, and it comes with an exciting homecoming: Chris Sanders, the original co-creator, director and voice of Stitch, is returning to write the script.

Sanders, who co-directed the 2002 animated classic alongside Dean DeBlois, is in final talks to pen the new story, marking his first major involvement with the franchise in years. While he won’t be directing the follow-up, Sanders’ return signals a strong creative link back to the franchise’s roots. The upcoming sequel will be a brand-new story, not a remake of the original sequels like Maia Kealoha, and continues Disney’s confidence in the franchise’s staying power.

Fans can also revisit the animated classic that started it all, along with the full collection of the beloved Lilo & Stitch franchise, all on Disney+. With over 640 million hours streamed globally, the franchise continues to capture hearts and delight fans around the world. A new sequel is currently in development.
