Stepping into the iconic roles are: Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. These rising stars will headline the new Harry Potter series on HBO Max, designed as a decade-long project, with each season adapting one of Rowling’s seven books in greater depth than the original films.

Harry Potter showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said:

“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

Casting slowly became a thing for the upcoming HBO series last month when the first members of Hogwarts faculty were cast. John Lithgow (Conclave) joined the cast as Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer (Kaos) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid, stage actor Luke Thallon (The Favourite) as Professor Quirrell, and comedian Paul Whitehouse (Harry & Paul) as Argus Filch also announced.

J.K. Rowling’s hugely popular book series was previously brought to the big screen in a film franchise featuring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter. In contrast, the upcoming TV series will allow for a deeper exploration of the books’ storylines, free from the time limitations faced by the films. Rowling will act as an executive producer on the project, which HBO describes as a “faithful adaptation” of the original novels.

Production is set to begin this Summer at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, located just outside London near the Warner Bros. Studio Tour — the very site where the original films were made. This return to the iconic location reinforces the show’s connection to the Wizarding World’s cinematic legacy.

While HBO and HBO Max have not set an official premiere date, the Harry Potter series is expected to air in either 2026 or 2027. Production is scheduled to begin this summer at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, the historic site near the Studio Tour that previously hosted filming for the original films. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, confirmed the company is targeting a late 2026 or early 2027 release window.

The new Harry Potter series for HBO and HBO Max is being shaped by some of television’s top creative talent. Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) is confirmed to direct multiple episodes and executive produce.

Their appointment follows a lengthy creative pitch process, where Warner Bros. invited a select group of writers to share their vision for the show. These included Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran, and Michael Lesslie, with Gardiner ultimately emerging as the lead writer. Laura Neal (Killing Eve) has also joined the writers’ room.

HBO Max’s Harry Potter is expected to be released on the service in either 2026 or 2027.
