Andrew Garfield Is Sam Altman In First ‘Artificial’ Trailer

    Josh Martin-JonesBy Josh Martin-JonesSeptember 10, 2026

Artificial has released its first trailer, offering the clearest look yet at Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino’s new drama about the rise of OpenAI.

The film dramatises the people and decisions behind the artificial intelligence company, including the turbulent period in November 2023 when Altman was removed as CEO before returning to the role only days later.

The trailer arrives ahead of the film’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5 and its international premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 11.

First ‘Artificial’ Trailer Reveals Andrew Garfield’s Sam Altman

    Still from 'Artificial'

The first footage places Garfield’s Altman at the centre of a fast-moving story about ambition, power and the increasingly complicated relationship between people and artificial intelligence.

The film follows the development of OpenAI and the events surrounding Altman’s brief removal from the company in 2023. The trailer also introduces Yura Borisov as OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, one of the key figures in the company’s history and the internal conflict surrounding Altman’s leadership.

    What Is ‘Artificial’ About?

    Still from 'Artificial'

Artificial is a drama spanning roughly two decades of machine-learning research, beginning with Sutskever studying artificial neural networks under Geoffrey Hinton before eventually crossing paths with Altman.

The story then moves through the creation and growth of OpenAI, examining the increasingly blurred lines between technological ambition, corporate power and responsibility as artificial intelligence moves from specialist research into everyday life.

The 140-minute film is written by Simon Rich and distributed by NEON.

    Who Stars In ‘Artificial’?

Garfield leads the film as Altman, with Borisov starring as Sutskever and Mark Rylance portraying Geoffrey Hinton.

The supporting cast includes Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd.

Barinholtz appears as Elon Musk, while the ensemble represents many of the researchers, founders and technology figures surrounding OpenAI’s development.

When Is ‘Artificial’ At The London Film Festival?

    Still from 'Artificial'

Artificial will receive its international premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 11 at 21:00 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

Further festival screenings are scheduled for October 15 at Vue West End and October 16 at the Royal Festival Hall.

We previously covered the film’s addition to the festival in our London Film Festival 2026 additional titles guide.

    When Is ‘Artificial’ Released?

Artificial will have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival on October 5, 2026.

NEON is then set to release the film in select US cinemas on December 25, 2026, ahead of a wider theatrical rollout in January 2027. A wider UK theatrical release date has not yet been confirmed.

Artificial receives its international premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2026.
