The BBC confirmed that the hotly anticipated finale of Doctor Who Season 2, titled The Reality War, a feature-length episode will premiere in a simultaneous worldwide broadcast, airing in primetime on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and streaming on Disney+ outside the UK.
In a major break from the current season’s Saturday morning release model, The Reality War will not debut on iPlayer at 8am, aligning instead with the global simulcast to allow fans around the world to watch together. And it gets bigger — over 450 cinemas in the UK and Ireland are expected to host screenings of the two-part finale. The penultimate episode, Wish World, and the concluding chapter The Reality War — both written by Russell T Davies and directed by Alex Sanjiv Pillai — will play back-to-back on the big screen.
‘Doctor Who’ Season 2 Finale: Cast, Synopsis and Start Time

The epic climax of Doctor Who‘s second season Wish World and The Reality War will star Ncuti Gatwa, Millie Gibson, Varada Sethu, Bonnie Langford, Michelle Greenidge, Angela Wynter, Jemma Redgrave, Ruth Madeley, Jonah Hauer-King, and Anita Dobson.
Russell T Davies summed up the stakes in his usual thrilling fashion:
“The Doctor is doomed, Belinda is lost, Ruby is trapped, UNIT is powerless, the Unholy Trinity rule supreme and the Underverse is rising. I can promise shocks, scares and revelations off the scale. Come and have fun!”
According to RadioTimes, the official BBC synopsis reads:
“The devastating climax. Strands that have drawn across seasons and centuries now pull together, tight as a noose, as legends converge for battle. Our brave, battered, beaten Doctor stands alone and helpless against the Unholy Trinity. Surely this is the end? Unless…”
The Season 2 finale will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, with the exact transmission time to be confirmed in due course, and simultaneously on Disney+ outside of the UK (where available). Adding further weight to the simultaneous global premiere, Disney+’s May 2025 release schedule lists The Reality War with an 11am PT slot — not the typical midnight drop. This would sync up with a 7pm UK transmission, the same treatment given to the show’s 60th Anniversary Specials and Joy To The World.
With a primetime BBC debut, Disney+ simulcast, and hundreds of cinema screenings expected, Doctor Who is closing out its second season with a universe-shaking bang.
