Letterboxd, the global hub for film lovers and critics alike, has announced the launch of the Letterboxd Video Store — a new curated rental platform set to debut later in 2025. The initiative was revealed at this year’s Festival de Cannes, marking a bold new step for the rapidly growing film community.
Built to serve one of the most passionate and influential audiences in cinema culture, the Letterboxd Video Store will feature themed rental shelves, spotlighting everything from acclaimed festival favourites to underseen global gems and fresh new voices. These selections will be available either on demand or via limited-time festival-style windows.
A Platform for Films Without Distribution

More than just a typical TVOD (transactional video on demand) launch, the Letterboxd Video Store aims to connect cinephiles with films that might otherwise slip through the cracks. In a move that could significantly benefit independent filmmakers and sales agents, Letterboxd is exploring ways to include titles that have yet to secure wider distribution.
This curated space is being positioned as a discovery-first destination. As Letterboxd CEO Matthew Buchanan explains:
“From members who are dedicated to exploring the archives of cinema history, to those who consistently platform new and emerging artists, film discovery is Letterboxd’s driving force.
Every day, we see members recommending films to each other, adding to their watchlists and hungry to discover more. Letterboxd Video Store is our way of delivering for those film lovers, creating a dedicated space for films that deserve an audience.”
Driven by the Community
What sets the Letterboxd Video Store apart is its curation model. Rather than relying solely on traditional distribution deals or algorithms, the platform will harness community behaviour and enthusiasm to shape its offerings. With over 20 million global members—and more than 1.3 million new users joining in January 2025 alone—Letterboxd’s growth speaks to the rising power of peer-to-peer recommendation in a shifting film landscape.
The service will particularly appeal to younger audiences already active on the platform, offering rights holders a direct link to an engaged and vocal fanbase.
What’s Coming Soon to Letterboxd Video Store?
While the full list of available films, regions and rental windows is yet to be confirmed, Letterboxd has promised more details closer to launch.
As film culture becomes increasingly decentralised, the Letterboxd Video Store could become a vital bridge between audiences and the stories that deserve to be seen.
