It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s….Sentry? The new Thunderbolts* Super Bowl trailer has finally arrived with an exciting new look at the upcoming Marvel Studios’ film.
What is the plot of ‘Thunderbolts*’?

Early in the trailer, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) recruits Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) to stop some great, unknown threat. That threat, being The Sentry/Void (Lewis Pullman) who we’ve only seen as Bob thus far. As for Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko)? We’ve yet to see much of her which begs the question: Does Taskmaster die? Is she working for someone else? While she may appear in an unknown side plot, it does make one wonder.
The Thunderbolts* Super Bowl trailer focuses on the team working together, with Starship‘s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” blasting in the background. Another theme of the trailer, an important part of the overall film, is redemption. All of the members of the Thunderbolts have questionable pasts. It seems as if they’re all ready to move forward and leave their pasts behind. The question is, will their pasts leave them?
A new synopsis was also released, alongside the trailer:
Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian , Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?
Who is Sentry?

Robert “Bob” Reynolds, also known as Sentry, first debuted in The Sentry #1 by Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee, and Rick Veitch. An addict with schizophrenia and anxiety, Robert Reynolds illegally obtains a version of the super soldier serum from Project Sentry. Unaware of the effects, he takes the serum and his mind manifests into two parts – The Sentry, a do-good heroic persona and the Void (no, not the Loki/Deadpool & Wolverine void), who believes to stay alive, it must kill the same amount of people that Sentry saves.
Sentry is one of the most powerful characters, possessing high levels of speed, strength, intelligence, heightened senses, energy projection, and flight. As the Void, while possessing these same powers, he is able to invade the mind of others and manipulate himself into different shapes.
Although the Thunderbolts* trailer does try to hide the character, at times we see him turning people into shadows and a large, dark shadow cast over New York City. It’ll be interesting to see the full interpretation of the Void in the film.
What Does The Asterisk Mean?
You may have noticed a funny little symbol on the end of Thunderbolts*. That symbol is an asterisk and is typically meant to mark a word to signify a footnote attached. It may also be a mark to signify a fixed typo when messaging another prson. Sorry, I meant person*. What does this mean in the context of Thunderbolts*? Well, nobody knows. However, there have been a few theories.
The most popular theory is that the name of their team is only temporary, and that it’ll be changed by the end of the film. Perhaps there will only be one left by the end of the film, leaving them to be Thunderbolt*, or maybe we’re looking at our new Avengers leading into Avengers: Doomsday? Only time will tell.

Along with the trailer, a new poster was also released. The poster is a play on Wheaties cereal, also referenced in the trailer by Red Guardian.
