Captain America: Brave New World marks Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) first theatrical outing as Captain America after being given the mantle from Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame. Can Sam Wilson live up to his predecessor? Find out what critics are saying about the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment below!

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Is A “Mixed Bag”

While critic reactions praise the action, the general consensus is that the plot starts to fall apart after the first act and becomes confusing. Jack McBryan from The Direct praises Harrison Ford and Carl Lumbly as standouts but calls the film overall a “mixed bag.”

#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld was a mixed bag. The movie has a strong emotional core and great villains. Ford and Lumbly were the standouts. The first act was strong but lacked enough tension, good action scenes, and stakes to hold my attention until it ended kind of abruptly. pic.twitter.com/NIJy8fCesg

I thoroughly enjoyed #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld    It's nice to see a more straightforward story from the MCU. Anthony Mackie gives his best performance thus far and Harrison Ford is a welcome addition. The action sequences are entertaining but have some spotty CGI at times. pic.twitter.com/MdU4ZWXMRd

Chase Hutchinson from The Wrap also praises the action as “fun”, though he says the film is unable to take off.

For a film supposedly about moving Marvel forward, #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is frustratingly stuck looking backwards. There are the occasional fun fights and Harrison Ford is fully committing to the fun, though Anthony Mackie's action sequel is just never able to take flight. pic.twitter.com/ZlCez1SdJa

The Latest MCU Film Is “Pretty Solid”

Other critics had nothing but positive words for the newest Captain America film. Rachel Leishman from The Mary Sue calls the film “fun” and praises Anthony Mackie and Danny Ramirez’s performances as Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres.

#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld brings an exciting idea for the future of the MCU under Sam Wilson as leader. A pretty solid Cap meets Hulk film but where it shines is in @AnthonyMackie and @DannyRamirez's performances. Harrison Ford is having so much fun and I had fun with him pic.twitter.com/cE6zv0uo6j

#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld was…awesome! Not only is it way more entertaining than I thought, it strikes a nice balance of being grounded and also comic-book-y, very similarly to early MCU. Best of all? It feel very much like a CAPTAIN AMERICA movie. Anthony Mackie is quite… pic.twitter.com/SBIW0sUheB

#CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is engaging yet standard. The political thriller story starts strong, although it gets convoluted. Surprising how much of a sequel it is to The Incredible Hulk. Anthony Mackie is a great lead & Harrison Ford shows he is still the ultimate movie star. pic.twitter.com/V88xuTEvdg
