Star Wars: Starfighter and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope are set to make franchise history when both films are released in IMAX 70mm in 2027.
The premium-format screenings will mark the first time a Star Wars film has been presented in IMAX 70mm. The original 1977 film will return to cinemas on February 19 as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, followed by Starfighter on May 28.
‘Star Wars’ Reaches IMAX 70mm For The First Time
According to Variety, both releases will be available at participating IMAX 70mm cinemas as well as on digital IMAX screens.
Although several entries in the long-running franchise have previously played in IMAX, the large-format 70mm presentation is new territory for the galaxy far, far away. The format uses physical 70mm film prints and is available at only a limited number of specially equipped cinemas around the world.
Further details about participating venues and ticket sales have not yet been announced. It is therefore not yet confirmed which UK cinemas will offer either film in IMAX 70mm.
When Is ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ Returning To Cinemas?
A New Hope will return to cinemas on February 19, 2027, kicking off the franchise’s 50th anniversary year. It will be the first time the original film has received an IMAX release of any kind.
Originally released on May 25, 1977, George Lucas’ space opera introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader. It went on to become a cultural phenomenon and launched one of cinema’s most recognisable franchises.
The anniversary engagement will give audiences the opportunity to experience the film on the biggest possible screen shortly before the next theatrical chapter arrives. The precise version of the film being supplied for the IMAX presentation has not been detailed in the latest report.

Directed by Shawn Levy, Starfighter stars Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a rogue pilot whose mysterious past pulls him into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy.
The ensemble cast also includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray and Amy Adams.
Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay, with Levy and Kathleen Kennedy producing. Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen and Josh McLaglen serve as executive producers.
The film is expected to tell a standalone story featuring new characters rather than continuing the Skywalker Saga directly. Its May 28, 2027 release date falls almost exactly 50 years after the original Star Wars opened in cinemas.
Why IMAX 70mm Is Becoming A Bigger Draw
Demand for IMAX 70mm presentations has grown significantly following the success of large-format releases from filmmakers including Christopher Nolan. The limited number of compatible screens often turns these engagements into destination cinema events, with audiences travelling considerable distances to see films projected from 70mm prints.
