Lorne Balfe has officially been announced as the composer for The War Between the Land and the Sea, the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off series created by Russell T Davies. Best known for his work on blockbuster scores such as Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Black Widow, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and His Dark Materials, Balfe brings cinematic weight and dramatic flair to the Whoniverse’s latest chapter — and fans now have the chance to be part of the music’s journey.
Attend a Live Recording of the Spin-Off’s Soundtrack
In a rare behind-the-scenes opportunity, fans are being invited to register interest in attending a live recording session for the soundtrack, set to take place on Thursday, 26th June at BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff. The event is open via sign-up at fragmentedmusic.com, giving Whovians a glimpse into how the world of The War Between the Land and the Sea is being sonically constructed. The news was confirmed in an Instagram post on Balfe’s page.
Murray Gold Not Returning for ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea’?
Balfe’s appointment marks an exciting — and somewhat surprising — shift in the sound of the Whoniverse. Longtime composer Murray Gold, who recently returned to score Doctor Who Season 1 under Davies’ new era, will not be scoring the spin-off. Balfe’s inclusion suggests The War Between the Land and the Sea may be carving out a bold new tonal identity, with a soundscape distinct from the main show.
The series, a five-part UNIT-centric drama, stars Jemma Redgrave, Ruth Madeley, and Russell Tovey, and follows the global fallout after the re-emergence of the Sea Devils, one of the Doctor’s oldest foes. Alexander Devrient also reprises his role as Colonel Ibrahim, UNIT’s dependable second-in-command and recent love interest for Kate. Colin McFarlane is set to return as General Austin Pierce, a character previously seen in Torchwood: Children of Earth, when Captain Jack (John Barrowman) came up against the terrifying 456. Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki), Adrian Lukis (The Bill), Patrick Baladi (The Office), Vincent Franklin (Cucumber), Francesca Corney (The Buccaneers) and Mei Mac (Call the Midwife) have all been cast in undisclosed roles.
With Dylan Holmes Williams directing and a writing team led by Davies and Pete McTighe, the project already promises cinematic visuals, and with Balfe onboard, now a cinematic sound to match.
