At its 2025 Upfront presentation in New York, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) officially announced that its streaming platform Max will be rebranded as HBO Max this summer. The move marks a return to the prestige-driven identity that originally defined the service and comes amid a period of significant growth for the company’s streaming division. Over the past year, WBD has added 22 million global subscribers and reversed a nearly $3 billion loss to reach profitability. The company now projects it will surpass 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026.
This strategic evolution is rooted in a clear shift in consumer priorities. Rather than asking for more content, viewers are increasingly demanding better content, and no brand in WBD’s portfolio embodies quality more consistently than HBO. CEO David Zaslav underscored this during the announcement, stating, “We are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”
HBO Max Will Focus on Quality Over Quantity

JB Perrette, President and CEO of Streaming, and Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expanded on the decision during their Upfront stage appearance. Perrette emphasised WBD’s commitment to distinctiveness, saying, “It’s really not subjective, not even controversial – our programming just hits different.” Meanwhile, Bloys reaffirmed the renewed direction, noting that HBO Max more accurately reflects the brand’s promise: “To deliver content that is recognised as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.”
The return to the HBO Max name is more than just a branding change – it’s a strategic pivot back to prestige. With the company doubling down on high-performing genres such as HBO originals, recent box office hits, docuseries, and curated reality shows, while scaling back on lower-engagement categories, WBD aims to set itself apart in a crowded streaming market.
HBO Max will continue to serve as the global home for prestigious and iconic entertainment, from Game of Thrones to Friends, Harry Potter to A24 films, all under a single, revitalised brand that now once again proudly carries the name HBO.
