As Doctor Who gears up for its highly anticipated second season, fans are already buzzing with excitement. With new mysteries to unravel, a brand-new companion, and more danger awaiting the Doctor, the stakes are higher than ever.
From plot details to returning characters, here’s everything we know so far about Doctor Who Season 2 – and why it could be shaping up to be an unmissable chapter in the Time Lord’s story.
When Will ‘Doctor Who’ Season 2 Be Released?

UPDATED: Doctor Who Season 2 will be released on BBC iPlayer on April 12. The episodes will air weekly at 8am GMT on BBC iPlayer, with a simultaneous release on Disney+ elsewhere (12 am PT, 3 am ET).
The BBC has yet to confirm an official release date for Doctor Who Season 2. Season 1 premiered in May 2024, so if the series follows a similar schedule, Season 2 could arrive in a similar release window, with a potential premiere in May 2025.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies previously teased on BBC’s The One Show that the season would be coming “sooner than you think” – implying a March/April release might be possible. Disney+ currently has Daredevil: Born Again airing between March 5 and April 29, with the hotly-anticipated Andor Season 2 premiering on April 22, so Disney could potentially squeeze Doctor Who between the two, or wait until a few weeks into Andor‘s airing.
The release window was confirmed on January 19, when a leaked look at Disney+’s 2025 lineup was revealed in a post on Reddit. Situated between Daredevil: Born Again and Andor Season 2, as predicted by yours truly. Also revealed in the look at 2025, was the confirmation that the upcoming spin-off The War Between The Land and The Sea would be released at the end of the year, in between Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 and Marvel Television’s Wonder Man, currently set to release in December.
In early February 2025, writer Inua Ellems revealed in a newsletter that the season was set to air in April and May. Whilst the theorised March 29 premiere could happen, it more likely points to the show premiering on one of April 5, 12 or 19, though it wouldn’t be wise for Disney to release this show so closely to Andor, even if the two were to overlap regardless.
Who Is The New Companion In ‘Doctor Who’ Season 2?

The new companion joining Doctor Who Season 2 is Belinda Chandra, played by Andor actress Varada Sethu. According to the teaser attached to the 2024 Christmas Special edition of Doctor Who: Unleashed, Belinda works in a hospital, though her full backstory and connection to the Doctor remain shrouded in mystery.
Fans may recognise Varada from her earlier appearance in Doctor Who Season 1, where she played Ordained Anglican Marine Mundy Flynn in the episode Boom, written by Steven Moffat.
Will Millie Gibson Return as Ruby Sunday in ‘Doctor Who’ Season 2?

Doctor Who Season 2 will of course see the return of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. Of course, he won’t be alone – his companion will be Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra, with appearances from Season 1 companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.
Jemma Redgrave also reprises her role as Kate Stewart, leading UNIT alongside Shirley Bingham and Colonel Ibrahim, played by
Ruth Madeley and Alexander Devrient, respectively. The teaser trailer for Season 2 offers a glimpse of the return of Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood, the mysterious character whose true intentions remain unclear.
During production of the season, Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid) was seen on-set for various episodes, though his involvement with the series has not yet been confirmed. Also seen on set with no public confirmation, was Bonnie Langford as classic companion Melanie Bush.
Archie Panjabi, best known for her role in The Good Wife, is confirmed to appear as a villain. While details about her character remain under wraps, her involvement hints at a formidable new foe for The Doctor. Former EastEnders star and Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis MBE has been announced to guest star in an episode for the season, with the press release teasing a “thrilling and frightening adventure”.

On February 21, it was announced that Christopher Chung (Slow Horses) had joined the cast of Doctor Who Season 2 as a character simply known as ‘Cassio’. He will meet the Doctor and Belinda Chandra for a thrilling adventure in the forthcoming second season – described by showrunner Russell T Davies as one of the “toughest episodes we’ve ever made”.
On February 26, it was revealed that Alan Cumming (Spy Kids, The Traitors US) would appear as Mr Ring-a-Ding, a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside — and the consequences are terrifying. Cumming is returning to the Whoniverse after previously playing King James I in the 2018 episode “The Witchfinders.”
