This review was made possible by Popped receiving an advanced screening of Good Omens Season 3.

After seven years, Good Omens has reached its grand finale. Good Omens 3, directed by Rachel Talalay, serves as a 90-minute series finale to the story of the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant). Originally slated to be six episodes like previous seasons, it was cut down to a singular episode to wrap up the series after original showrunner Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual misconduct.

The final season, Good Omens 3, takes place several years after the finale of Season 2. Aziraphale is now the Supreme Archangel, appointed by the Metatron, and Crowley is sad, depressed, and drunk. The events of Season 3 begin when Heaven is ready to set off the Second Coming, when suddenly things start going missing.

Coming back to the world of Good Omens, we find Aziraphale as the Supreme Archangel, having replaced Gabriel after he went off with Beelzebub to Alpha Centauri in Season 2. The angel has been tasked with preparing for the Second Coming of Jesus (Bilal Hasna), and must, to Aziraphale’s dismay, the destruction of the world that is set to follow. Instead, Aziraphale hopes that the Second Coming leads to happiness and peace on Earth instead. Of course, his fellow angels are less than pleased with this idea. Things suddenly go haywire when the Metatron (Derek Jacobi) goes missing, Jesus leaves Heaven, and The Book of Life vanishes into thin air.

Aziraphale, overwhelmed by everything, begins to panic before Michael (Doon Mackichan) steps up and offers to investigate the missing Book along with Muriel (Quelin Sepulveda) as the lead investigator. Aziraphale heads down to Earth to search for Jesus and ask Crowley for help, despite abandoning him several years prior. The angel has seemingly learned nothing from their time apart, and the demon calls him out on it and declines to help. Crowley eventually decides to help Aziraphale help him on his quest, and the two go off together to find Jesus. The suspense kicks up when Sandalphon (Paul Chahidi) and Uriel (Gloria Obianyo) go missing as well.

The Beginning and The End of Good Omens

Good Omens 3 starts as a thrilling, exciting mystery and whodunnit with heartwarming moments that really feels like what Good Omens is and always has been. It’s a funny, silly, beautiful start, but it fills up so much of what little time we have left.

The mystery of who is creating chaos lasts about an hour in, before everything is almost abruptly solved. This is where the effects of a single episode finale are felt. When things are starting to pick up and come together and really feel like something big is going to happen, everyone solves the mystery, which was the obvious answer all along and then things get even worse for everyone involved. It almost feels as if the past hour was somewhat of a waste of time, although it’s clearly setting up the end. You can feel them rushing toward the finish line, which I don’t believe can be blamed on the creatives, but of being shoved into such a short timespan. It is nearly impossible to create and follow through with a new adventure while trying to wrap up two past seasons’ worth of story for Aziraphale and Crowley.

The beginning and the end, the end and the beginning of Aziraphale and Crowley’s story come in the last half hour of the episode. They are finally, truly on the same page and all the time we’ve spent together with them pays off. The last portion of the episode takes place in Aziraphale’s bookshop with Aziraphale, Crowley, Satan (Toby Jones), and God (Tanya Moodie, taking over from Frances McDormand). The angel and demon finally get answers to questions they’ve had since the beginning, and get the chance to make big decisions which leads us to the end of the series.

The only thing I am truly sad about is that we didn’t get to see a lot of older characters, like from Season 1, except a blink-and-you-miss it cameo from Adam Young (Sam Taylor Buck). If we would have had a full season, I would have loved to see Anathema and Newt, Madame Tracy, or hell, even Hastur. I am incredibly grateful that we were able to get anything at all and for it to be so lovely at the end, it makes me happy.

‘Good Omens’ Season 3 – Final Thoughts

I can’t say what the ending is, and I don’t want to even allude to it, but I will say that I was open-mouthed, snot-nosed sobbing during the last 20 minutes of the episode. Good Omens has been such a huge part of my life for the past seven years that I was afraid no ending would feel satisfying enough for me, but they nailed it. I’m tearing up again just writing this. Will everyone love it? Probably not, but I don’t think it will be incredibly polarizing as some fear. This episode, especially the ending, is a love letter to everyone who has been touched by this show in any way. It’s not perfect by any means, but considering we could have been left with no ending at all, I think it’s a pretty damn good one.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
