Monstro City has fallen. But with your help, it can rise again. Over a decade after first capturing the hearts of kids worldwide, online video game Moshi Monsters is making a monster-sized comeback. Thanks to a fan-powered Kickstarter campaign, the creators behind the beloved 2008 online game are rebuilding the world of Moshi from the ground up, and this time, it’s mobile-first, quest-driven, and community-led. Whether you spent your childhood earning Rox, completing Super Moshi Missions, or planting seeds to attract rare Moshlings, the new game aims to recapture the charm of the original while evolving it for a modern audience. Here’s what we know so far.

What’s In The ‘Moshi Monsters’ Reboot?

The mobile-first return to Monstro City with a new story, a mysterious asteroid known as the Flash-teroid has struck Monstro City, reducing it to ruins. The world is covered in ash, the beloved Moshlings are scattered across the globe, and only the player, one of the six original Moshi Monsters, can help bring everything back. There’s a fitting irony to the game’s new villain: the Flash-teroid. In the lore, it’s a mysterious asteroid that wiped out Monstro City — but in reality, it was Adobe Flash’s shutdown in 2020 that brought Moshi Monsters offline. Now, that same narrative device symbolises the end of one era and the start of another

Here’s what’s already confirmed:

  • Play as one of the six original Moshi Monsters
  • Rebuild Monstro City in the wake of destruction
  • Complete quests and rescue lost Moshlings
  • Nurture your monster and watch them grow
  • Explore locations from the original game, reimagined in stunning new artwork
  • Earn Rox at the daily Puzzle Palace
  • Decorate your home, build new rooms, and collect furniture sets
  • Create your dream Moshling Sanctuary
  • Play classic mini-games at the revamped Moshi Funpark

The iconic six monsters have also been given a brand-new look, redesigned to fit the modern era of the game. Not only that, but the game appears to be leaving behind its original 2D side-scroller layout in favour of a fully reimagined 3D-style world — a major visual upgrade that brings Monstro City into the modern mobile era.

Kickstarter Tiers: Rewards For Supporting The Campaign

At the time of writing (1:30 AM on June 16), the campaign has already raised £15,603 of the initial target of £250,000 with over 250 supporters. Backing the campaign doesn’t just support development, it unlocks in-game perks, exclusive content, and even ways to be part of the world itself.

Here are some highlights from the tiered rewards system:

Entry Level (£5–£30)

  • £5: In-game Supporter Badge
  • £15: Access to the Secret Moshling Society Discord server
  • £30: Your name in the game credits

Gameplay Access & Items (£50–£150)

  • £50: Join Alpha & Beta tests + digital Rox
  • £60: £50 worth of Rox + exclusive in-game content
  • £90: Supporter’s clothing and furniture sets
  • £100+: Golden Monster Skin, rare cosmetics and more

World Builders (£250–£1,000)

  • £250: Zac Binspin World Tour hoodie (Kickstarter exclusive)
  • £350: Name a location in the world
  • £500: Name a shop
  • £1,000: Become an actual NPC in the game.

Ultimate Creator Tiers (£5,000+)

  • Design a Moshi Store or Moshling
  • Unlock your own Rox Star badge
  • Play as Buster Bumblechops himself (Only 1 available !)

One of the most notable changes in the reboot is how Rox, the game’s in-universe currency, will function. In the original Moshi Monsters, Rox could only be earned through daily gameplay, puzzle-solving, and the occasional code from magazines or Moshi toys. In the new version, Rox will still be earnable through in-game activities — but for the first time, players will also be able to purchase Rox using real money.

This brings the game in line with modern mobile titles and allows the devs to keep the core game free-to-play while offering optional paid content. The team has stated that they’re aiming to strike a fair balance, ensuring that progression remains possible without spending, while also giving supporters and fans more ways to customise and speed up their experience if they choose.

Stretch Goals: Unlocking the Real Moshi Magic

A Second Chance for a Generation’s Favourite Game

Moshi Monsters isn’t just coming back, it’s evolving. This Kickstarter isn’t about cashing in on nostalgia, but about building something new with the community that loved it the first time around. And as someone who collected the trading cards, played the DS games, bought the magazine every month, and even visited the Moshi Bus at the Trafford Centre, I can’t express how genuinely excited I am to see this world come back to life.

In a letter shared with fans on the Kickstarter page, Mind Candy explained the reasons for the return of the franchise:

Back in February we received an impassioned email from a fan asking us to bring back their favourite childhood game, Moshi Monsters. We asked him to jump on a call with us. He agreed and we talked through the game, what he’d loved most about it and what he’d hope to see if we brought it back today.

After the call we chatted internally and decided to explore whether we can make this happen. We love this world. We’ve never left it, living its lore daily through our audio content and game apps for kids set in the Moshi World. But we’ve always wanted to return to the original game and deliver something special that captured the magic of the original.

After exploring game concepts and the “hows” of doing it, we agreed: this is how we make it happen. The only way we could ensure that we can deliver the game that fans want is by doing it with our fans – fan-backed, fan-funded and fan-guided.

We reached back out to the fan who had first contacted us and told him our plans and the game concept. He loved the idea and was so happy we were doing it.

We asked him how we should announce this. His answer was simple: “Just go big.”

And so this is us going big. We hope you like it!

Moshi Monsters has a target date of May 2027 for a relaunch. The Kickstarter runs until August 15 , and the future of Monstro City depends on whether it reaches its goals. Check out the Kickstarter announcement video below:
