Breakdown 2 | Popped

The time has come, and Obi-Wan Kenobi has finally arrived on Disney+. Fans have eagerly waited for the limited series, but the time is now for the moment we’ve all waited for, following months of waiting and bingeing everything which came before. This is a breakdown of the events of the show’s second episode, simply titled “Part II” – as always, there are spoilers throughout this article… You have been warned!

Daiyu Wanna Find Me?

Still from 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Episode 2: "Part II"

We open this episode arriving on Daiyu as Obi-Wan searches for Leia. Daiyu is a new planet in the Star Wars universe, which takes inspiration from Hong Kong with huge skyscrapers, neon street lighting and graffiti. Also reminiscent of Blade Runner and its futuristic version of L.A.

As Obi-Wan makes his way through the underbelly of Daiyu looking for information about Leia, he comes across a veteran from the Clone Wars, and we get a cameo by Boba Fett himself, Temuera Morrison! The blue on his uniform signifies he was a part of the 501st battalion, which was led by Anakin and Ashoka during the Clone Wars, so it’s very possible this Clone Trooper recognizes Obi-Wan. Since this trooper is homeless and not a stormtrooper, he must have defected or left sometime after Order 66. The Trooper doesn’t say anything, but they share a moment, and you can see Obi-Wan is nervous about having his cover blown.

We then move on, and Obi-Wan is offered some spice from a street kid, who is another cameo by Ewan McGregor’s own daughter, Clara Mathilde McGregor. One of the other kids overhears this and tells Obi-Wan that there is a Jedi in town who helps people. He tells Obi-Wan that for a price, he can take him to him. We then find ourselves in the Jedi’s hideout as he is helping a mother and her child flee from the planet. The Jedi is none other than Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals, Big Sick).

He uses his “Jedi mind trick” to persuade a transport officer to let the mother and son board a freighter and sends them off, but not before collecting payment for his services. Obi-Wan confronts the “Jedi” about finding Leia, and we learn his name is Haja Estree and for a hefty price, he will help those who need it. Obi-Wan sees through Haja’s scheme, and we see he is nothing but a Con artist using magnets and remotes to pass as a Jedi and take people’s money. Obi-Wan threatens Haja with a blaster and gets a lead on Leia.

Obi-Wan arrives at the location given by Haja, and it’s a spice lab. Obi-Wan causes a scene to slip past and snags a thing of spice from one of the guards. He gets caught by two guards in a hallway. They engage Obi-Wan, and even though he is out of practic,e he ends up subduing the guards. This fight scene was interesting because we see Obi-Wan fighting without the force, and we can see in the fight that he only uses defensive attacks. A reminder that Jedi only attack in defence and that he is still a Jedi at heart while out of practice.

It’s A Trap!

Still from 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Episode 2: "Part II"

Obi-Wan then arrives at where Leia should be, but it’s a trap. The crew that we saw in the last episode grab him and explains how an Inquisitor (Reeva) hired them to steal Leia to lure him out. Obi-Wan uses the spice that he grabbed from the guard earlier and smashes it on the ground, making his escape. We then see Reeva arrive on the planet.

Obi-Wan finds Leia, and after initially attacking hi,m she reluctantly agrees to go with him. They make their way through Daiyu, and Leia sees Obi-Wan’s lightsaber and discovers that he is a Jedi, but remarks “You look kind of old and beat up”, reminding us again he is not the same Jedi Knight that we remember.

We then see the Grand Inquisitor, Fifth Brother, and Fourth Sister confront Reeva on Daiyu about kidnapping Leia without their approval. The Grand Inquisitor tells her that she is less than the rest of them, calling her “the least of us” and that she came from the gutter. He explains that even though her powers allowed her to join them, she will never be one of them, saying “All the power in the world can’t mask the stench beneath”.

Rupert Friend again is just absolutely menacing while delivering his dialogue. He delivers it in such a cold and steady manner, making him truly intimidating. Reeva stands her ground, though telling him, “Maybe that stench is your failure”. The Grand Inquisitor informs her to stand down and that he will capture Kenobi, but Reeva disobeys him yet again and sends out a Bounty across the city for Kenobi.

Alderaan Things Happen… Again!

Still from 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Episode 2: "Part II"

We catch back up with Obi-Wan and Leia, who is amazed by this new planet she is on, reminding us that she has never been off Alderaan and while she is a princess, still lives a life in hiding. Leia then questions Obi-Wan’s status as a Jedi, saying that she heard that all the Jedi were dead and then asks him to make her float to prove it.

He explains that if he uses the force, it will give them away, and as she questions him, we get this great moment where young Leia tells Obi-Wan, “You think the less you say. The less you give away, but, really, it’s the opposite.” It greatly shows Leia’s maturity while also hinting at her sensitivity to the force.

The duo then gets attacked by a bounty hunter, and Leia sees the bounty on Obi-Wan over a Holocron. Realising Obi-Wan lied and that they took her to get to him, she runs, setting us on a chase through Daiyu as bounty hunters are hot on their trail. Obi-Wan follows Leia to a rooftop, where Obi-Wan fights off bounty hunters with a blaster. Trying to escape, Leia jumps and misses the rooftop, and Obi-Wan saves her by using the force. Paying off the earlier joke of her wanting him to make her float and proving to her that he is, in fact, who he says he is.

Back on their escape, they get ambushed by yet another bounty hunter but are saved by Haja, the fake Jedi from earlier. He tells them the whole city is locked down and directs them to a cargo port that will take them to a planet named Mapuzo, where people will be waiting and can help them. Obi-Wan asks how he can trust Haja, but he assures him that he may be a criminal, but he will get them off the planet safe and that Obi-Wan is not alone.

We then see Reeva parkour through the city on her hunt for Kenobi, and she runs into Haja, who tries to stop her, but she subdues him with little effort. She then uses the force to read his mind to find Kenobi. This shows how powerful Reeva is in the force because one of the only other times we have seen this ability was from Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens.

Cargo and Leave

Still from 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Episode 2: "Part II"

Obi-Wan and Leia make it to the cargo port, and we get a sweet moment between Obi-Wan and Leia where Obi-Wan tells her that she reminds him of someone. He tells her that she was “fearless too, and stubborn.” And that she was a leader. Reminding us of the friendship he and Padme shared and how Leia is both her mother and father.

Reeva intercepts them at the cargo port, and Obi-Wan sends Leia to the ship as he evades the second sister. She taunts Obi-Wan and tells him that she doesn’t plan to kill him but to take him to Vader. We see a look of shock and fear across Obi-Wan’s face as Reeva confirms that Anakin is alive. This confirms that throughout the course of the last ten years, Obi-Wan believed that he had killed Anakin on Mustafar and has been living with that guilt ever since.

Just as Reeva is about to catch Obi-Wan, she is interrupted by the Grand Inquisitor. He scolds her for disobeying him and tells her to stand down, but Reeva says no, thank you and KILLS THE GRAND INQUISITOR! This gives Obi-Wan a chance to escape, and as he and Leia fly off, Reeva screams at them how she will hunt them down and destroy him. We then see Obi-Wan on the ship, visibly shaken by what he has just learned, and we close in on his eyes as he says “Anakin” and the camera cuts to our first look at Hayden Christensen‘s Darth Vader, in a bacta tank and the episode closes out with the iconic Vader breath.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Episode 2 – Final Thoughts

This episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi did a lot in setting us up for the journey we are about to take on this series. I absolutely love the dynamic between Obi-Wan and young Leia, and my favourite parts of this episode were the quieter moments with just them going through the streets of Daiyu.

Moses Ingram again is a standout of the episode as Reeva, and while we do get more hints as to why she is so hell-bent after Kenobi, I think there is still a lot more we are going to learn about her. I loved Kumail’s character as the fake con man Jedi, and while I think it was just a one-off cameo to further the plot, I would love to see Haja show up again.

The highlight moment for me in this episode was finally seeing Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader once again. While it was only for a moment, it was just so satisfying to see him again, and it made the ten-year-old in me scream with excitement.

Overall, I think this episode was a lot of set-up for the series moving forward but everyone is so good that I was just having fun with this group of characters on this new planet. I am fully on board, and I cannot wait to see what surprises they have in store for us moving forward.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is now streaming on Disney+, with new episodes arriving every Wednesday. Check out a trailer below:
