VisionQuest is finally bringing Paul Bettany’s Vision back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, more than five years after White Vision disappeared from Westview in the finale of WandaVision.
The upcoming Marvel Television series arrives on Disney+ this October and will serve as the final chapter of a trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. It will also bring James Spader’s Ultron back to the MCU for the first time since Avengers: Age of Ultron, introduce the adult Tommy Maximoff and take audiences inside Vision’s increasingly complicated mind.
Following the release of the first trailer at D23, Marvel has now revealed considerably more about what Vision has been doing since we last saw him.
Here is everything we know about VisionQuest.
When Does VisionQuest Release On Disney+?
VisionQuest will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on October 14, 2026.
Marvel Television officially confirmed the release date during Disney’s Upfront presentation in May before releasing the show’s first public trailer during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August.
Disney+ currently lists VisionQuest as a drama, science-fiction and superhero series, with the UK version of the service also confirming the October 14 launch. The series will consist of eight episodes. A complete official episode release schedule has not yet been published by Disney.
What Is ‘VisionQuest’ About?
At the centre of VisionQuest is a version of Vision who possesses the memories of the original Avenger, but does not necessarily feel the emotional connection to the life those memories describe.
Disney’s official synopsis reveals that Vision has been hiding after escaping those who wanted to weaponise him. He attempts to understand himself by consulting several artificial intelligence personas embedded within his programming, including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H. and Ultron.
His relatively quiet existence comes to an end when a bounty is placed on his head, forcing Vision to flee alongside Thomas Shepard, a mysterious young man who may be his son reincarnated. Vision will have to determine who Thomas really is while resisting Ultron’s influence.
Showrunner Terry Matalas has described the series as a much more character-focused examination of Vision than audiences have previously seen.
Speaking to Empire, Matalas explained:
“This is the first time where we get to watch Vision drive the narrative, and understand who he is, who he thinks he was.”
The series will explore an identity crisis that has been building since Vision was first introduced to the MCU.
Which Vision Is In VisionQuest?
The Vision starring in VisionQuest is technically not the exact same being who fought alongside the Avengers and had a relationship with Wanda Maximoff.
The original Vision was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War after the Mind Stone was ripped from his head.
Wanda later created another Vision inside the Hex surrounding Westview in WandaVision. Meanwhile, S.W.O.R.D. secretly reconstructed the original Vision’s physical body, stripping it of its colour and memories to create White Vision.
The two Visions eventually confronted one another in the WandaVision finale. Rather than simply fighting, Hex Vision restored White Vision’s memories before White Vision declared, “I am Vision”, and flew away.
That is the character we are following now.
At New York Comic Con, Bettany explained that White Vision has access to those restored memories but struggles to emotionally process them:
“So he has the memories, but he doesn’t have the emotions and the feelings, and I think that’s what the journey is.”
What Is Vision’s Mind Space?
One of the strangest elements of VisionQuest is what Marvel has called Vision’s Mind Space.
The trailer shows Vision living an understated life while working at a Scottish pub. At night, however, he enters a form of rest mode and retreats inside his own consciousness.
There, Vision’s mind is represented by a surreal mansion populated by human manifestations of artificial intelligences connected to his history and Tony Stark.
Bettany has explained that these AIs essentially help Vision process the information he gathers while attempting to interact with humanity. The problem is that this internal world also allows Vision to avoid genuinely participating in the real one.
It is a concept that gives VisionQuest an opportunity to continue the more experimental visual storytelling of WandaVision and Agatha All Along while taking it in a distinctly science-fiction direction.
How Is Ultron Alive In ‘VisionQuest’?
Perhaps the biggest returning character is James Spader’s Ultron.
Ultron seemingly died at Vision’s hands at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but VisionQuest has now provided a surprisingly straightforward explanation for how the villain survived.
Vision did destroy Ultron’s final physical body. However, his consciousness survived.
According to Bettany, Vision uploaded Ultron into his own mind during their final confrontation. Ultron has therefore effectively spent years imprisoned inside Vision’s consciousness.
That also explains why Spader can appear as both the recognisable robotic Ultron and a human avatar inside Vision’s Mind Space.
The dynamic between the pair is apparently going to be considerably stranger than their previous relationship.
In a D23 interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Bettany described it as:
“We have a sort of father-son, therapist-psychopath relationship.”
Ultron has not exactly spent his imprisonment staring at a blank wall either. Spader revealed that the AI has retained access to human culture, consuming television, history and the internet while also taking up painting.
The result appears to be a version of Ultron who is still dangerous, but has had years to observe humanity and develop his already complicated relationship with the being he helped create.
Which Other Marvel AIs Appear In ‘VisionQuest’?
Ultron is only one part of Vision’s internal collection of artificial intelligences.
VisionQuest is bringing back several AI systems connected to Tony Stark and the wider MCU, although most will now appear as human avatars.
James D’Arcy plays J.A.R.V.I.S.. D’Arcy previously portrayed Edwin Jarvis in Agent Carter and Avengers: Endgame, the human butler who ultimately inspired Tony Stark’s AI.
The casting creates an interesting circular connection. Bettany originally voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. himself, beginning with Iron Man before the programme became part of Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Orla Brady will play a human representation of F.R.I.D.A.Y., the AI Tony used after J.A.R.V.I.S. became Vision.
Emily Hampshire portrays E.D.I.T.H., the Stark-built artificial intelligence previously introduced in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Meanwhile, Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer play human manifestations of Tony’s robotic assistants D.U.M.-E and U.
Together, they effectively turn Vision’s consciousness into a living archive of technology stretching back to the beginning of the MCU.
Who Is Thomas Shepard And Is He Tommy Maximoff?
Another major piece of the WandaVision story will finally return in VisionQuest.
Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepard, better known to Marvel fans as Tommy Maximoff.
Tommy and Billy were the twin sons Wanda created while living inside the Westview Hex. Both seemingly disappeared when Wanda finally brought the Hex down.
Agatha All Along revealed that Billy’s soul survived and entered the body of Billy Kaplan. The finale also showed Billy locating Tommy’s disembodied soul and helping it enter the body of another boy who had just died.
Marvel’s official description deliberately calls Thomas a mysterious boy who “may be Vision’s son reincarnate”, but previous footage and Marvel’s own New York Comic Con presentation identified Mollica’s character as Thomas Shepherd.
In Marvel Comics, Thomas Shepherd becomes Speed, a member of the Young Avengers with super-speed abilities. The trailer suggests Vision initially has no idea that his son has survived, giving the series a direct emotional connection to the family at the heart of WandaVision.
Who Is In The ‘VisionQuest’ Cast?
Alongside Paul Bettany, James Spader and Ruaridh Mollica, VisionQuest has assembled a large supporting cast drawing characters from across Marvel history.
Todd Stashwick plays Paladin, a mercenary who appears to be connected to the bounty placed on Vision.
T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta, an android with major connections to Ultron in Marvel Comics.
Lauren Morais plays Lisa Molinari, while Diane Morgan plays an associate of Paladin. Mary McDonnell is also part of the cast in an undisclosed role.
Another particularly surprising returning MCU actor is Faran Tahir, who is expected to reprise his role as Raza, the Ten Rings leader who kidnapped Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man. Exactly how Raza fits into Vision’s story remains unknown, particularly given his apparent death in that film.

Will Wanda Maximoff Appear In VisionQuest?
Do not expect VisionQuest to deliver the long-awaited Wanda and Vision reunion.
Elizabeth Olsen has not been announced as part of the cast, and Matalas has indicated in recent interviews that Wanda is absent from the story.
Vision is also aware of what happened to Wanda in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she apparently died destroying Mount Wundagore.
Matalas jokingly explained to Empire that Vision knows Wanda’s fate because he has effectively caught up on what happened while he was gone.
The first trailer even shows Vision watching events from Avengers: Age of Ultron, suggesting the idea of Vision reviewing his own history could be incorporated quite literally into the series.
Of course, whether Wanda is actually dead remains a separate MCU question. Marvel has never shown her body, and Agatha All Along deliberately avoided providing an entirely definitive answer.
How Does ‘VisionQuest’ Connect To ‘WandaVision’ And ‘Agatha All Along’?
Marvel has officially described VisionQuest as the third and final instalment of a trilogy.
WandaVision began the story by exploring Wanda’s grief following Vision’s death and ultimately introduced White Vision.
Agatha All Along then continued the story through Billy Maximoff, revealing how one of Wanda and Vision’s sons survived and concluding with Billy beginning the search for Tommy. VisionQuest brings those threads together.
White Vision must confront memories of a family he remembers but cannot emotionally connect to, while Tommy has returned in a new body and is unknowingly heading towards his synthetic father. That makes the series less of a conventional WandaVision spin-off and more of the conclusion to the Maximoff-Vision family story Marvel has been telling across Disney+.
Who Is Making ‘VisionQuest’?
VisionQuest was created for television by Terry Matalas, best known for 12 Monkeys and Star Trek: Picard. Matalas serves as showrunner and is also among the directors.
The directing team includes Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali and Matalas. Current production credits indicate that each directed episodes across the eight-part series.
The writing team includes Matalas alongside Cindy Appel, Michael Taylor, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti and Matthew Okumura.
Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos, Jac Schaeffer, Terry Matalas and Christopher J. Byrne are among the executive producers.
Michael Giacchino, who won an Emmy for his work on HBO’s The Penguin, is composing the score.
Will ‘VisionQuest’ Connect To ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
Marvel has not officially announced a direct connection between VisionQuest and Avengers: Doomsday.
The timing is certainly notable. VisionQuest begins in October, shortly before Marvel’s next Avengers movie arrives in December, meaning it is one of the final MCU stories audiences will see before Avengers: Doomsday.
However, Bettany was not among the actors Marvel initially announced for the film, so any claim that VisionQuest directly sets Vision up for Doomsday would currently be speculation. There is arguably greater long-term significance in the pieces the series is putting back onto the MCU board, but maybe not for Doomsday…
