Just a few years ago now John Cena stole the hearts of everyone in the whole entire world as the foul-mouthed “freedom” fighter. Yes, I am indeed talking about the one and only Peacemaker. One film and an entire first season later, Cena is prepared to don the toilet bowl-like helmet and red spandex once more in the name of peace for the hotly anticipated second season of Peacemaker.
This return is one that fans have waited years for now, studio shake-ups unfortunately set this season back further and further as James Gunn ascended the ranks at Warner Bros. to acquire the reins to the DC kingdom. While the initial expectation was to see Peacemaker again in August, fans were treated to a nice surprise when the character made a brief yet hilarious appearance in Superman. A few weeks after release and less than a fortnight away from Season 2, John Cena is ready to dish about just how that cameo happened.
Peacemaker’s Hot Takes on ‘Superman’

In a new promo released with John Cena, the DCU actor revealed just how his cameo came to be. Cena revealed that the appearance was not always planned, in fact, he states that it all came together rather quickly and even at the “final hour.”
“I was called in at the final hour as we were preparing for Peacemaker Season 2. I did the costume fittings for the new Peacemaker Season 2 wardrobe. Hint, hint, wink, wink. And…they were filming Superman at the time and James [Gunn] asked me if I wanted to be involved and my answer was heck yes. So I got to go on a talk show and talk some smack about Superman. “
Cena goes on to state that there wasn’t much of a debate whether he was up for it or not, and that Gunn would always be someone he was willing to jump into action for.
“Well the good thing about James Gunn writing and directing Superman is he runs DC, too. So there is a short-list of folks who dial my phone and I will immediately pick up for them and say how can I be of service, and he is one.”
One thing that many fans may not have been aware of is just how close the sets for both were at multiple points throughout production. Both shows were filmed on soundstages simultaneously in Atlanta at one point at Trilith Studios. Gunn expressed the convenience of the setup, as he’d spread himself quite thin over the past few years, juggling so many other projects on top of his own. During this time is likely when they were able to film Cena’s brief appearance in the film.
Cena even offered his take on what makes Superman so iconic, and what he admires most about the character and his attributes that make him the Man of Tomorrow.
“I think everything from the branding to to the idea of a true virtuous superhero, you have to start the story of good and evil somewhere and I think Superman is building block one of that.”
Peacemaker Season 2 is set to hit HBO Max on August 21 with its first episode and will continue weekly on Thursdays at 9:00 PM ET. Cena will of course, return and alongside him, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, and Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante. Joining the quest for peace this season are Frank Grillo, Tim Meadows, David Denman, and Sol Rodriguez as Sasha Bordeaux.
