Over two years after James Gunn and Peter Safran were given to the keys to the DC kingdom, the fledgling DC Studios’ first major release, Superman, is here. The project was technically the first DCU film to be announced, with Gunn attached as writer two months before the slate reveal for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Gunn would not be officially announced as director until March of 2023, with many already assuming he’d pickup the project and shepherd the new era of DC films.
While Gunn’s Creature Commandos was technically the “first” entry into this new DC Universe, that was only considered the appetizer for the real debut of the DCU. Superman is set to hit theaters this weekend across the world, and the social media embargo has officially been lifted ahead of the review embargo, so what are critics saying about David Corenswet’s debut as the next Man of Steel?
The superhero myth is not the same after ‘Superman’
Jenna Anderson of Phase Hero calls Superman “awe-inspiring” and that it was everything she wanted it to be and more. She states that as a DC fan, this was exactly how she wanted to see this world brought to life, describing it as “loving” and “unique.”
‘Superman’ is on the level of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Mike Ryan says Superman had him the happiest he’s walked out of a theater since Top Gun: Maverick. Ryan also quips that the film put him in a great mood, adding that isn’t something that happens often these days!
Scene Stealers in ‘Superman’
User ResonantJustice calls Rachel Brosnahan’s casting as Lois Lane “generational.” The user teasers that fans of the character will be absolutely delighted for this performance, saying it’s just as much her movie as it is Superman’s and that their chemistry is “off the charts.”
Youtuber Caboose declares Edi Gathegi’s performance as Mister Terrific an “absolute scene stealer.” He goes on to say that Mister Terrific has one of the “best action sequences in the film” and that his one liners are absolutely on point. Gathegi seemingly avengers the mutant that isn’t supposed to die!

Grace Randolph calls James Gunn’s new film the best Superman film to date. While she notes that the film isn’t perfect, its incredibly close to being so. Randolph has cast aside her previous skepticism on Gunn’s DCU and says she’s now a “Believer.”
David Corenswet as Superman Feels Peeled Off The Pages
Chris Killian calls the film a “living, breathing DC comic book” and that the film maintains director James Gunn’s “trademark quirkiness.” Killian calls the film “perfectly cast” specifically singling out David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in the film, saying he manages to steal almost every scene he’s in!
Superman continues to be the beacon of hope and goodness that we’ve always known him to be, according to Rachel Leishman. She adds that Gunn brought “lightness” and “happiness” to the character.
