#TheLittleMermaid was an ABSOLUTE gem! @HalleBailey IS Ariel, no matter what anyone says. She brings in the charm and personality of Ariel to life.

Melissa McCarthy as Ursula was just *chef kiss*. This film was such a joy to experience. pic.twitter.com/QNaq6uRsLi

Praise for Halle Bailey

Agents of Fandom‘s Aisha shared her initial reactions, instantly giving praise to the film’s ensemble cast, including Daveed Diggs‘ standout performance as Sebastian.

#TheLittleMermaid is STUNNING! @HalleBailey SHINES as Ariel. Jonah Hauer-King's Eric is charming. Melissa McCarthy's Ursula is wicked. Daveed Diggs' Sebastian is a standout! This is the Disney live-action remake to watch. Full review coming to @AgentsFandom very soon! pic.twitter.com/oym6wkaCqP

Zoe Rose Bryant shared the highest of praise for the film’s lead Halle Bailey, who’s performance is described as “note-perfect star making performance”.

#TheLittleMermaid is a live-action remake that retains the heart and soul of the story we know and love, and it’s elevated even further by a note-perfect star-making performance from Halle Bailey – she was born to be on the big screen, & she’s why this new take is worth watching. pic.twitter.com/Tcewp2L4MY

The Best Disney Live-Action Remake?

TheDirect’s Gillian Blum shared that the film is actually Disney’s best live-action remake.

#TheLittleMermaid is the best Disney live-action adaptation to date. Halle Bailey IS Ariel. Major props to the sound effects team. Good changes, though one new song with too much autotune. Could watch this version’s Under the Sea all day, it was the highlight of the whole thing.

Grace Randolph joined in the fanfare calling The Little Mermaid Disney’s best live action adaptation, in mentioning that it succeeds not just as nostalgia but as an often stunning film in its own right.

#TheLittleMermaid is #Disney's best live action adaptation, in that it succeeds not just as nostalgia

but as an often stunning film in its own right.

Not PERFECT, but it's got the Disney magic!
And should definitely be seen on the big screen.

No Love for Clements and Musker?

Collider’s Steven Weintraub expressed praise for the film saying there’s “a lot to love”, but also shared that he was upset that the film failed to acknowledge the original minds of the 1989 animated film of the same name. He points out that the film wouldn’t exist without Ron Clements & John Musker, so they shouldn’t be an afterthought in the credits.

A lot to love in #TheLittleMermaid. Halle Bailey is fantastic and also thought Melissa McCarthy & Daveed Diggs were soooo good and had the theater laughing. I also thought Rob Marshall did a great job with the underwater scenes.
