Ghosted on Apple TV+ follows Cole Turner (Chris Evans) as he meets and falls in love with an art curator named Sadie Rhodes (Ana de Armas). After she cuts off all communication with him after one night, he travels to London to find her, only to realize that she is not who she said she was. Cole gets caught up in something much bigger than the whirlwind romance he was looking for.
Should You Ghost ‘Ghosted’?
I will say off the bat that Ghosted is a lot of fun. Despite the shaky story and plot holes, the concept is interesting enough. It’s not too often that we get to see the man play the damsel in distress, and even less often do we see our former Captain America, Chris Evans, play the role. Ghosted marks the third time Chris Evans and Ana de Armas have worked together, first in 2019’s Knives Out and then in 2022’s The Gray Man. I wouldn’t consider this film their best, but it shouldn’t be slept on, either.
The dialogue isn’t great. It was corny at times, but sometimes it was there on purpose for comedic effect. They really want you to understand the cactus analogy throughout the film, so they practically shove it in your face…and quite literally in one guy’s face. There are several plot inconsistencies that had me scratching my head. The mysterious weapon that the protagonists and antagonists want apparently has the potential to wipe out the entire Eastern Seaboard, but later they mention that it could kill thousands. I’m not a math genius by any means, but wiping out the Eastern Seaboard sounds like millions to me.
Ana de Armas plays CIA agent Sadie Rhodes. Although her character is cliche, the agent who can’t get close to anyone, I still loved her. It’s always nice to see a woman kicking so much ass and there is no lack of that in Ghosted. Can we please get more women saving himbo men like Chris Evans’ character, Cole Turner?
Chris Evans plays Cole Turner, a farmer from Virginia. He’s very smart, but also kind of an idiot, at least when it comes to knowing when to stop talking. He’s kind, yet emotionally clingy. One would think someone who looks like him would know how to fight, and he does get a few good moves in that he clearly learned from watching professional wrestling, but otherwise, it does feel somewhat unrealistic. With that said, I did enjoy him being the one needing to be saved. It’s always nice for the roles to be reversed.
Mindless Fun
With some movies, it’s best not to think about them too much and watch them for what they are. Ghosted falls neatly into that category. It’s an action-packed romantic comedy that never tries to get deep or philosophical. It’s purposefully silly and cheesy and that’s okay. There are some fun cameos in the film, including a few Marvel actors that’ll have any fan excited to see. For a brief moment, it feels like Ghosted could be an alternate universe in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, give Ghosted a chance as long as you can ignore Ana de Armas’s terrible wig. Seriously, what were they thinking? It’s exciting to watch, and there are a few good laughs. It’s not very complex so if you’re looking for something like that, this might not be the one for you. Ghosted also stars Adrien Brody, Amy Sedaris, Tate Donovan, and Mike Moh.
Final Thoughts
Ghosted isn’t flawless by any means, but that doesn’t take away from it being an enjoyable film to watch. Although the stars’ chemistry wavers, it’s not completely unbelievable, especially if you’ve seen them in their past films. The cameos are what really make this film for me, but overall, I liked it, and I think anyone who is willing to give it a chance for what it is will enjoy it, too.
